Since I have been trying to go all-natural as much as I can in our household items, my first thought was, how on earth am I going to get rid of them without bug sprays? This is going to take forever and be an all-out war! But to my pleasant surprise, with a little consistency and perseverance the pests have been eradicated! What did I do? Read on!
1. Get Rid of the Food Source
2. Essential Oils
Unfortunately, the ant’s pheromone scent is fairly strong and plain water just will not erase it. But with the help of these essential oils, you can wave bye-bye to the little intruders.
Clove Essential Oil:
With Clove EO we get a double whammy. It not only disrupts the ant’s pheromone trail, it also kills ants on contact. So keep this one handy!
“Eugenol is a component of clove oil. It is a fast acting contact insecticide that is effective on a wide variety of household pests such as cockroaches, ants, dust mites, flies, wasps, spiders, crickets, and fleas…
Eugenol has little or no residual activity, although the scent of cloves will linger. Products based on eugenol are considered minimum risk pesticides with very low risk or damage to the…user.” See Source below.
The little to no residual activity means that you will need to spray this directly on your home invaders if you want to kill on contact. The oil residue will not remain very long on a surface that you have sprayed it on.
How to Wage War
Here are the recipes I used around my house.
¼ cup Water
¼ cup Rubbing Alcohol or Vodka
15 drops Peppermint EO
1-3 drops Clove EO
10 drops Citrus EO (Lemon, Lime, or Orange)
1. Pour all ingredients into a small spray bottle.
2. Shake before each use.
3. Spray directly on bugs, or on entry points.
4. Do not use on food surfaces. Repeat application as needed.
Ant Away Floor Cleaner
I mopped my floor daily with this cleaner to distract the little invaders.
4 cups Water
5 drops Peppermint EO
2-3 Tbsp. Lavender scented Castile Soap
Mix all ingredients in a small bucket and generously apply to floor. No rinsing necessary.
Note on Castile Soap: This soap actually dissolves the waxy coating on the ant’s exoskeleton which is fatal to the ant.
Do give up, you can fight and win. And enjoy your house smelling delightful! If you have any questions on where to find quality essential oils, send me an email at email@example.com Thanks!
