Every store-bought cleaner is chalked full of chemicals! Think of the items that come to mind with the "Kills 99.9% of bacteria" slogan and there you have the culprits. The whole, 'wipe out all the bacteria' sounds great, but what are the businesses that manufacture these products not telling us? Take a closer look with me, at what we are spraying and wiping all over our homes!
The problem is two-fold: one, commercial cleaners wipe all good bacteria out, and two, they leave harmful chemicals behind! For example:
Chlorine, often labeled as "sodium hypochlorite" or "hypochlorite," is present in almost all household cleaners, unfortunately for the inhabitants of many homes, breathing in the fumes can severely irritate the lungs. This poses a serious health risk to those with pre-existing heart or respiratory problems.
According to the non-profit Cancer Prevention Coalition, some other problematic chemicals include; crystalline silica, an irritant to the eyes and lungs, and a likely carcinogen, and butyl cellosolve. Both have been linked to kidney and liver problems and are reportedly toxic to forming cells! This is just 3 of the common chemicals used in household cleaners. And if that's not enough check out these quotes:
"According to the National Research Council, no toxic information is available for more that 80% of the chemicals in everyday-use products. Only 1% of toxins are required to be listed on labels, because companies classify their formulas as "trade secrets."
-Lorie Dwornick, researcher, educator, and activist, 2002
"More than 7 million accidental poisonings occur each year, with more than 75% involving children under age 6!"
The Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons
"Women who work at home have a 54% higher death rate from cancer than those who work away from home. The 15-year study concluded it was as a direct result of the much higher exposure rate to toxic chemicals in common household products!"
-Toronto Indoor Air Conference 1990
"Within 26 seconds after exposure to chemicals such as cleaning products, traces of these chemicals can be found in every organ in the body."
The average American household contains between 3-25 gallons of these toxic chemical-filled cleaners!
